While taking on minor renovation work, the homeowner of this airy Treme home disliked the dust-collecting, cracked brick fireplace that stood as an eyesore. By covering the existing brick hearth with cement tiles, repairing masonry, and installing/finishing walnut trim at the hearth and ceiling (milled by
Seth Welty of Colectivo), this old chimney pops and no longer feels like a deadspot in the room.

The kitchen and living area were originally separated by a wall, with different ceiling heights. This gave the opportunity to install a walnut threshold which wraps the chimney at the ceiling, mirroring the walnut floorpiece |
